The Story

DPR Associates designed the Family and Group Camp Improvements at Crowders Mountain State Park. The project included the renovation of existing camp sites, the addition of 7 new sites, 3 new vault toilet buildings, improvements to the access road between the camping areas, and design of a new water system that includes a new pump house, clorination system, and distribution lines throughout the campground. DPR worked closely with the client to ensure that the improvements do not take away from the primitive feel of the camping areas. By the use of existing tree surveys and extensive site visits, very few trees have been removed for the construction of the new improvements. The campground facilities are located one mile from the park visitors center (by trail) and prior to the improvements, the campgrounds were not accessible to users with disabilities. DPR worked closely with the Owner and State Construction Office to ensure that the newly renovated park provided equal opportunites to all users. When complete, users with disabilities will be able to drive to accessible campsites and have access to water and bathroom facilities.

In addition to the campground improvements, DPR completed a parking lot expansion for the Crowders Mountain State Park Visitors Center. The project was completed in 2012 and added 75 spaces to the parking lot. Both projects are more than 20% under budget.
