The Story
Reedy Creek Park is a rare jewel within Charlotte’s city limits; nearly 700 acres of woodland preserved for active and passive recreation and environmental education.
This project, located on property which was included in a land grant from King George, involved extensive site analysis in order to identify and catalog the environmental and archaeological features of the site. It contained numerous special soil types and plant communities, as well as remnants of a 1780’s stone house and gold mining activity.
The master plan includes picnic and camping areas, active recreation areas, hiking/ biking trails, an environmental education center, and equestrian areas. More than 85% of Reedy Creek Park will remain undeveloped, in an effort to preserve the diverse land forms, vegetation, streams, and wildlife.
In addition to master planning DPR provided full construction drawings and construction administration for this park.
Land acquisition and master plan: 1980-1982
Four phases of construction: $5.5M budget, 1984-1990
