The Story

DPR Associates, Inc. developed the master plan and construction documents for this 270-acre park, located in Southeastern Mecklenburg County. During the master planning process, DPR coordinated public meetings to gather citizen input and assisted the County with negotiations to purchase additional land and site access.

DPR worked closely with County officials to select recreation uses and to locate them appropriately on the site. Proposed features include a 17-acre man-made lake, soccer and softball fields, tennis and volleyball courts, mountain biking trails, hiking/ interpretive nature trails, playgrounds, and a park maintenance facility.

DPR Associates worked with specialists from UNC-Charlotte to develop the site environmental analysis and coordinated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for locating and flagging of wetlands on the site. Although it is an active recreation park, more than 50% of the acreage in Beatty Park will remain undeveloped.

Phase 1, which included the lake, soccer fields, playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, access roads and parking, opened to the public in Spring of 1999.

Phase 2, which has a +/-$3.6 million budget, includes athletic fields and support buildings, playgrounds, parking, passive recreation and an amphitheater, and is currently under design.
